Sports Hall at Khalifa Sports City (Aspire Dome)

The Khalifa Sports Hall stands as the world’s largest air-conditioned indoor facility of its kind, distinguished by its architecturally iconic design.

As a landmark development for Qatar and the wider region, it played a pivotal role during the 2006 Doha Asian Games, serving as a premier venue for major indoor sporting events. Its scale, innovation, and functionality continue to set a benchmark in global sports infrastructure.

The Khalifa Sports Hall is a state-of-the-art indoor stadium with a seating capacity of 15,500, designed to host a wide range of sporting disciplines. This fully enclosed, climate-controlled facility integrates an athletic track, football field, and Olympic-standard swimming and diving pools, all housed within two massive semi-circular air-conditioned shells. These are connected by a striking 13,500 m² flat and curved roof, forming a unified architectural statement.

Spanning five floors and covering a total built-up area of 112,000 m², the hall exemplifies engineering excellence and multifunctional design.

Structural Highlights

  • Shells: Each semi-circular shell spans 26,372 m² with a diameter of 240 meters, forming the core structural elements of the facility.
  • Steel Structure: The stadium incorporates approximately 10,000 tons of structural steel, ensuring both durability and flexibility in design.
  • Roof System: The expansive roof features a seamless standing seam system with composite insulation layers, covering 50,000 m² of the dome area.
  • Curtain Walls: High-performance double-glazed curtain walls enclose the perimeter of each shell, enhancing thermal efficiency and natural lighting.

Coordinating the delivery and assembly of over 10,000 tons of structural steel and associated materials demanded meticulous planning and flawless execution. This represented a significant logistical challenge, requiring synchronized efforts across procurement, transportation, and on-site operations.

Socioeconomic Impact

The construction of the Khalifa Sports Hall significantly boosted local supply and employment, creating thousands of jobs across engineering, construction, logistics, and operations. It also served as a catalyst for economic growth, driving increased tourism and attracting international sporting events that contributed to Qatar’s hospitality and service sectors.

As a national landmark, the facility has played a key role in elevating Qatar’s global image, showcasing the country’s commitment to sports excellence, architectural innovation, and sustainable development. Its presence reinforces Qatar’s position as a leading destination for world-class events and infrastructure.
