Lebanon Needs Our Help

The huge explosion of Beirut’s Port has touched and affected the education, housing, food security, and health sector of Lebanon putting further strain on the Lebanese people who have already been suffering from an economic crisis, and battling with the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.

Today in the densely populated city of Beirut about 300,000 people whose homes were badly damaged are displaced, 17 hospitals have been damaged and are un-operational, 120 damaged schools, and 15,000 metric tons of staple food stored in port warehouses was lost, leaving 6 weeks of stock compared to a 3 months standards supply. According to local assessments, as many as 500,000 people need assistance with immediate needs such as food, clothing, medicine and shelter.

CCC Supports Communities in Kazakhstan during COVID-19 Challenge

The below is a summary of an article published on May 12th and 15th 2019, in Kazakhstan’s Pricaspiskaya Comunna newspaper, about the on-going support provided by Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) towards the communities in Kazakhstan, especially during the outbreak of COVID-19.

With the global spread of COVID-19, the first registered cases in Kazakhstan were among residents of the two cities Nursultan and Almaty, in March 2020. As the number of infected people increased, a state of emergency was announced and cities and villages were set under lockdown.

With the steady increase of the virus in the country, CCC decided to focus its assistance on supporting medical teams, who are the front-liners of this pandemic working tirelessly with long shifts.

In a letter addressed to the Mayor of Atyrau (a city in Kazakhstan where CCC has operational presence), Mr. Hisham Kawash; CCC Regional Managing Director (CIS) said: “In these difficult times, CCC would like to extend financial assistance to the Atyrau region in the amount of 25 million Kazakhstani Tenge.” The donated funds were distributed by the Department of Public Health to 634 health care workers across various medical organizations as a bonus in recognition of and with great thanks for their efforts.

“Today, the global community is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The action against the virus is a major task not only for public authorities but also for civil society as a whole, and the effectiveness of the action depends on each one of us and on our shared responsibility. The leadership of the local government is doing a lot in this regard, but we would also like to contribute in the fight against the virus,” Mr. Hisham Kawash added.

CCC has also donated 20,000 testing kits to increase the screening capacity in Kazakhstan. In addition, CCC handed over to the Mayor of Aksay – a north-western town of Kazakhstan-, corporate camp facilities to use as needed by the town in its fight against the pandemic.

CCC’s support towards the implementation of socially important projects in various communities of Kazakhstan is long standing. It begun in the early 2000s, when CCC laid the foundations for the Karachaganak Field and continued throughout the construction of the Bolashak Oil and Gas Processing Plant and the Kashagan Oil Field Development (islands A and D) in the Caspian Sea.

In the past year alone, CCC’s financial assistance totaled around 54 million Kazakhstani Tenge allocated across a range of projects. From supporting low-income families by giving food vouchers to donations in the districts of Zhylyoy and Atyrau. Additionally, CCC’s support included helping disabled people, building dikes along a river to prevent flooding of residential houses in Kulsary town, repairing a mosque in Atyrau and sponsoring dancing and sporting events for the local youth.

City Centre Almaza Achieves LEED Gold Certification

City Centre Almaza (CCA), one of the biggest retail malls in Egypt has received LEED-Gold certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC). Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) exceeded the contract requirement for a LEED-Silver rating and accomplished the higher certification level of LEED-Gold (the second highest ranking of the program). LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is recognized as the standard measure of sustainability in buildings.

CCC completed the construction and LEED certification process of CCA project, for the developer Majid Al-Futtaim (MAF), as part of a joint venture with local construction company Hassan Allam.

Located in Heliopolis, East Cairo, this major retail and entertainment centre covers an area of 120,000 m2. The mall was successfully completed on time and was opened to the public at the end of September 2019.

CCA accomplished the LEED-Gold rating for its green building features that positively impact the project itself, the environment and the broader community. High standards in energy savings, water efficiency and CO2 emissions reduction were adopted. For example, the mall features the exclusive use of LED lighting, bicycle storage facilities and changing rooms for its full-time occupants as well as preferred parking spots for fuel-efficient vehicles.

Through the use of sustainable strategies, the project achieved:

City Centre Almaza is one of the only two LEED-Gold certified shopping centres in Egypt. CCC’s project team providing construction and environmental management expertise ensured that the project achieved the prestigious Green Building certification.

The LEED-Gold seal awarded to City Centre Almaza, is the latest addition to CCC’s list of Green Building projects including the Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal Building, two Doha Metro stations and the Palestinian Museum. CCC’s extensive knowledge and experience in sustainable practices is helping to shape the Green construction industry in the MENA region.

CCC and Alfanar Partner to Create Sustainable Livelihoods for Women Farmers in Upper Egypt

In April 2019, Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), started a new corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to create sustainable livelihoods for poor women farmers in in Minya, Upper Egypt.

Launched one year ago in partnership with Alfanar (www.alfanar.org), the Arab region’s first venture philanthropy organization, the initiative has since trained hundreds of female farmers in agricultural best practices and business skills, helping participants to improve their economic status by earning more income from their crops and livestock.

With 24% unemployment among women and 65% of Egypt’s economy reliant on agriculture, the need to modernize Egyptian farming and create dignified jobs for women in Egypt’s rural communities has never been greater. As the impressive results of this one-year project demonstrate, CCC and Alfanar’s partnership is at the cutting edge of the response to this great social and economic need.

Using a UN-pioneered model known as the Farmer Field Schools, this fruitful partnership has now trained 450 female farmers from 9 villages in Minya, while eight Ministry of Agriculture engineers were trained by professors from the University of Minya to act as Farmer Field School instructors.

Over 36 training days, cohorts of 25 students learned techniques around soil preparation, irrigation, treating plant diseases, composting, using natural alternatives to fertilizers and pesticides, and cultivating corn, soybean, garlic, okra and sesame. Students also learned various methods of animal husbandry, such as breeding poultry, Muscovy ducks, pigeons, rabbits and laying hens, as well food processing methods such as cheese making and rennet and animal feed production. An area of land in each village was rented where students could practice the farming methods learnt through the Farmer Field School.

For a group of 50 advanced learners who wished to go one step further and establish a professional farming business, the project also funded and established a Farmer Business School to deliver additional training on business planning, bookkeeping, marketing, profitability, risk management, and more.

Participants were also trained in a range of soft skills and important social and public health topics, including relationship management, early marriages, domestic violence, child labor, problem-solving, communication, anger management, oral health, FGM, family planning, and prenatal care.

Looking to the future, the Farmer Field School and Farmer Business School curricula have been digitized so that the project can be scaled more efficiently to other communities in Egypt, and eventually across the MENA region. The curriculum can be accessed through an Android-based app on mobile phones and tablets, and can function without access to the internet.

Unexpectedly, the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis has since revealed the great value of this innovative digitized programme, enabling women farmers to continue learning and enhancing their productivity throughout the current crisis. In light of the success of this pilot initiative, CCC and Alfanar are now looking to expand the scope of their partnership to help sustainably improve more lives in Egypt.
